The Muse Visits
So I had a thought for a short story and wonder of wonders, it just popped out tonight. Yep, just popped right out. It's nice and short too, so it might make a good submission for some of those Web markets.
I have to say, I love it when something comes out this easily. Nice and compact, and just lays right out on the page. It all falls into place, without any agonizing over what the right ending is. Yay, muse! Thanks for the wholly constructive and convenient visit... Well, hopefully the story doesn't suck, seeing how it's in its first blush and I always think those are great. ;)
Hope everybody's doing well and writing happily,
LLB

That's great news!
You should do a post on editing these things. How long do you wait after you write something that you begin editing? What sorts of problems do you find in your writing? Do you have any quirks?
This morning I had some quiet time, so I typed about 500 words - not much but I was really happy to finally get some work done. It was terrible but I made myself write and, even though rereading it was painful, I didn't let myself edit. Yet.
Anyhow, yay for Litblitz!
Excellent, L! I had one story come out like that this year, in a few hours. I also began writing one last Saturday night that, if I had managed to stay awake, would probably be finished. Now I find myself tepidly making it to the end, a paragraph a night only, sometimes. Blech.
It seems like there are two kinds of stories--the aforementioned ones that come out already finished, and ones that are only impressions or perhaps a scene in which ones builds around. These types of stories usually turn out much differently than you envisioned them initially. A lot of stories I begin with no ending in mind. Somewhere along the way, I get an idea from the characters what their motivations are and how it will end, but sometimes I have to listen to them for a long time.
Yeah, Maktaaq, you're totally right,
I should do a post on that... although I must say, I don't think that the way I handle it is a good way to do it. ;)
I'm so happy you got your 500 words -- you should be proud! And I think it's good not to let yourself edit for a while... those first impressions (or the first blush that I described) can be a little bit misleading.
Jen, I'm glad to hear you had a similar situation. I really love those... the easy ones that come out already finished. I definitely have had plenty that you describe... where I have no idea where they're going. Sometimes like you say, as I'm writing I'll come up with the end, the characters will almost do it for me. But occasionally there are stories that I just can't figure out, and those are the ones that end up just dying on the vine, sadly.
Damn muse. I haven't been paid a visit in months. I keep struggling through, even though I'm not really liking what comes out on the page.
Congrats, though Lady! It's a great feeling when it just flows out of you!
