St. Vitus Dance

Okay, so I had a mini nervous breakdown at work today, when I found out the bands that are playing the Coachella Festival. Nine Inch Nails, Bauhaus, Cocteau Twins, Gang of Four...

All right, so it's a lot of bands from my generation, but I just about lost it. Bauhaus was a little bit before my time in terms of show-going years so I'd kill to see them perform their songs live. I've never managed to see NIN live, even though I'm a big fan. I always loved Cocteau Twins... okay, need I say more? I guess I'm the exact demographic they're looking for for the festival. Someone who was growing up in the '80s... ha.

Anyway, yeah, I flipped for about 15 minutes, telling my boss I was probably going to need time off, but then reality hit later. As in, how the hell am I going to afford something like this? It requires flying out to California, first off. And I could be wrong but I think maybe Coachella is in some part of California that isn't really near anything else in California. So... dunno. But it would be so cool!

In other news, I finally ordered a sample copy of the print version of Barrelhouse and requested a copy of WordWrights. So hopefully I will have some good new research going on soon.

Thanks for reading,

LLB

I've succumbed to the New Orleans Jazz Festival for the last 5 years running. There are 12 of us (and counting) going down this year including 3 from the UK! Always a fun time. "What happens in New Orleans, stays in New Orleans"

Oh awesome -- I have heard nothing but good things about Jazz Fest. I was told that my night owl ways would be well rewarded there -- if the mood strikes, how you can go catch a band at 3am. :)

I'm jealous. Here in D.C. all we get is the DC 101 Chili fest. If we're lucky, Joan Jett might play again. The opening bands, though, are usually painful. Baltimore does a good blues fest and an experimental music fest, though.

The show in Cali sounds great. I'd say watch for a Bauhaus tour, but they'll probably kill each other. Love to see them, though. NIN is great live. I saw them once at the Limelight in NY City (an old church converted into music club). Marylin Manson and Foetus opened. It was a fun night.

Wow, I think the Cocteau Twins' "Heaven or Las Vegas" was one of the definitive albums of my freshman year (and Jane's Addiction's "Ritual" and the Grateful Dead's "American Beauty"; hey, there's no accounting for taste. I admire your fortitude, though; I can barely get out and see bands in the Baltimore area, much less a different state.

Hebdomeros, you saw Foetus too? What year was this. I saw Foetus for the "Sink" tour -- at the OLD 9:30 Club, so it was very up close and personal. It was a great show, however, I remember thinking that he was not someone I'd want to meet up with in a dark alley. Those eyes... I still listen to his Steroid Maximus album and every once in a while break out the Foetus stuff, but it's only once in a blue moon -- it's rare I get into the Foetus mood anymore. ;)

And yeah, I would imagine maybe Bauhaus would kill each other on tour, huh. Ha.

Jen, you have always had eclectic taste! I admire that. I can't say I've ever been too open to the Grateful Dead.... and don't admire my fortitude... this is still an idea percolating and actually, the more I think about it the less I think I'd have the money, it would be super expensive. (And I rarely go to shows anymore, it has averaged about 2-3 per year, so when I choose, I try to make it count, ha. Coachella would probably fulfill my show requirements for the next 3 years!)

I saw Foetus my last year in college, so it was either fall of '95 or spring of '96. I think it was the fall, though. Yeah, Thirwell's one hell of an intimidating performer. Kind of a Tom Waits on adrenaline. Great show, though.

How funny you know about Steroid Maximus. They're how I first got into Foetus. Someday I'll have to get the 2nd album.

The Steroid Maximus album I have -- and love -- is Gondwanaland (sp?). I love, love, love it. If that's the one you don't have, I highly recommend it. It's amazing.

I have that one. It's a great album. And just the idea of getting the guys from Voivod to do big band (and do it well) I find pretty funny.

He released a new one last year on Ipecac Records called Ectopia. It got good reviews, but I just haven't gotten around to it. Although more straight rock oriented, I like Thirwell's Clint Ruin stuff, too.

Ah, good. I'm glad you have that one, it's soooo awesome. (I hate that "wild irish rose" song though, but that's the only track I could do without.) It is one of my choices for one of the pack of CDs you'd want on a desert island. Like if you could choose 10, that would probably be on there, frankly.

I never got into his Clint Ruin stuff. However, I find it interesting how if you look at liner notes for a lot of industrialists, his name will pop up as having been involved on some songs etc... I know he's done work with Trent Reznor, for example... it's just cool to see him pop up like that. I have a feeling he's one of those crazy geniuses who hasn't gotten much mainstream cred.

I think I did mean to get that latest one but never got around to it. Mental note to self...

Oh man, that line up. DUDE. That's about all I can say when I look at it: DUDE.

Are you seriously considering going?

Hi Jeff,

Sorry, sometimes I don't see the older comments once they get buried for a few days. I hope you see this!

Anyway, I don't know that I can go unless there's some mysterious windfall of money from the heavens. I really want to go, so bad it hurts, but with my trip to New Orleans coming up, and the fact that I'm buying a laptop, I'm afraid I don't have the money to drop. :(

Isn't it a great lineup though? So unfair that there's nothing comparable here.

Oh, man. Yes, that's an amazing line up. I won't be able to go either, unfortunately. I'm already doing a bit of traveling (Chicago, probably Seattle) and I want to keep saving so I can move.

Wow, you're the second person who has recently said he's going to Chicago. And Seattle too! That's a lot of travel.

Where are you moving to?
